In this episode, Stijn Vanheule, a professor at Ghent University, discusses his journey into clinical psychology and his critical examination of the DSM, leading to his book Psychiatric Diagnosis Revisited (2018). He highlights the integration of psychoanalysis into the clinical psychology program at Ghent, which includes courses on qualitative research, cultural psychology, and psychoanalysis. Stijn also mentions his involvement in the Reading Lacan's Écrits project, which involves a line-by-line reading of Lacan’s works, resulting in four volumes. Additionally, with Derek Hook he edited the book Lacan on Depression and Melancholia (2023).
Stijn Vanheule is a clinical psychologist and professor at Ghent University, Belgium. He is also a privately practicing psychoanalyst and a member of the New Lacanian School for Psychoanalysis. He is the author of several books including, The Subject of Psychosis: A Lacanian Perspective (2011), Diagnosis and the DSM - A Critical Review (2014), Psychiatric Diagnosis Revisited: From DSM to Clinical Case Formulation (2018), and Why Psychosis is Not So Crazy (2024), which was nominated for the 2025 Gradiva Award.
