Rendering Unconscious episode 247.
On this episode of Rendering Unconscious, I sat down with Ann Pellegrini and Avgi Saketopoulou to talk about their book Gender Without Identity (UIT Press, 2023).
The conversation centers on the book "Gender Without Identity," which began as an essay winning the Tiresias Prize. Despite being accepted for publication in the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, the essay was later retracted due to its content on psychoanalysis's historical mistreatment of queer subjects. The authors thereby expanded their essay into a book, highlighting the complexities of gender identity and the limitations of current psychoanalytic theories. They argue for a more inclusive understanding of gender, emphasizing that all genders are acquired and shaped by social and psychological factors, including trauma. The book also critiques the concept of "core gender identity" and advocates for a more nuanced approach to gender and sexuality.
