On this episode of Rendering Unconscious, I sat down with Mary Kim Brewster, Carter J. Carter, Molly Merson, Avgi Saketopoulou, Ann Pellegrini, Lara Sheehi, and Stephen Sheehi to discuss the state of psychoanalysis.
In revisiting this episode, we continue to address various problems plaguing psychoanalytic institutes and the field overall. I also want to give a special shout out to one of my favorite people on Earth, Lara Sheehi, who celebrated her birthday last week. Happy birthday, Lara!
This discussion focuses on addressing oppression in psychoanalysis, emphasizing the need to dismantle oppressive structures within the field to protect future generations, including early career BIPOC and queer individuals. Challenges include external scrutiny, right-wing propaganda, and internal resistance. The conversation also explored the role of liberalism in perpetuating hierarchies and the importance of evolving psychoanalytic theories to address systemic issues. The discussants center the challenges and transformations in psychoanalysis, emphasizing the importance of community and the limitations of traditional analytic practices. Speakers highlight the need for diverse perspectives in the struggle against authoritarianism, the co-optation of voices of color, and the emotional labor involved in activism. The conversation concludes with a focus on love, care, and the psychic labor required to sustain these efforts, underscoring the importance of emotional support in the field.
